A university is the educational institute for higher studies. Universities are the backbone for producing quality man power for a country's development. In Nepal, there are 9 universities operating currently. They provide a variety of degrees on various areas of expertise. The students have choice of following universities in Nepal:
·         Far-western University, Kanchanpur
·         Kathmandu University, Kathmandu
·         Lumbini Bouddha University, Lumbini, Nepal

·         Nepal Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, Chitwan
·         Nepal Sanskrit University, Dang
·         Pokhara University, Pokhara
·         Purbanchal University, Biratnagar
·         Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu

Universities in Nepal offer Diploma, Masters, M.Phil & Ph.D. programs on various disciplines. Most of the universities follow semester systems for their assessment process. Even though, the largest university-Tribhuvan University runs many programs on annual examination basis.
There is slight variation in total number of years that students need to complete according to the nature of the program. This can be presented in following table:
SN
Level/Program
Academic Years for completion
Remarks
1
Bachelor Level
4-5 years

2
Masters Level
2-3 years

3
M.Phil.
2 years

4

To enter the university level education, one must complete the higher secondary level or PCL (12 years of schooling). The students are enrolled in the university only after an entrance examination. In some faculties, students have to face a high competition to get an admission. Institute of Medicine and Department of Engineering are few of them.

There are two types of universities in Nepal: Government-funded universities and privately run universities. The government-funded universities provide education in lesser fee than the privately run universities. Pokhara University and Kathmandu University are privately run universities and they are more expensive than other universities.

Even though, the history of higher education is not very long in Nepal, there is considerable progress in higher education. Universities in Nepal are proving to be very key institutions that are providing quality manpower to develop our country in all the sectors of life.
